Now, Lamborghinis: Miura aside, they’ve never really got me going in the same way as Astons or Ferraris. That was until I saw the new Lamborghini Aventador on Top Gear. I could certainly drive one of those! But back in the real world, BMW have entered the world of electric cars.
I’ve mentioned numerous electric cars here before: VWs, Renaults, Hondas, etc., but I think learning that BMW has flicked the switch makes everything a bit more exciting because, really, BMWs are a bit more exciting. OK, Jaguar went super electric a while back with the Jaguar Williams C-X75, but that’s hardly a car that the vast majority of us are going to drive to work in.
I can see the BMW hybrid i8 and the BMW all-electric i3 being more popular because, well, BMWs are very popular cars. For example, we have four on the GWA forecourt at the moment, if you don’t count the Minis (which we should). My favourites are the 2008 BMW M3 CS SMG Coupe (£19,995) and the 2006 BMW Z4 Sport Roadster Convertible (£10,995).
The BMW i8 is the sportier of the two new cars and will have a top speed of 155mph, doing 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds. The i3 is smaller and a little slower off the mark. I’m sure they will run well, but I’ll be interested to see how much BMW wants for them. At the moment, I think prices are too high, especially given the relatively small number of public re-charging points and the time it takes to recharge (hours). Perhaps BMW will help do something about this as well.
