The Old Farts ride again for the British Heart Foundation

It has been a while since I mentioned Wattsie in his lyrca but the time has come again. Following on from the mammoth Land’s End to John O’Groats bike ride last year, the Old Farts are getting back into the stretchy stuff for the London to Brighton bike race in the name of charity.
Gary and Chris are taking part in the London to Brighton Bike Ride, forming part of the Maris Pipers team, which is raising money for the British Heart Foundation. The bike ride takes place on 17 June by which time Wattsie assures me that the lyrca will be shiny, the day-glo as bright as ever and the Old Farts raring to go. You can sponsor Gary as he gives the cycling one last big push before he reaches 50 on their Virgin Money Giving page.
Everybody at GWA Cars & Finance is getting behind Wattsie (from nice comfortable seats) and we’ve got a few cars on the forecourt that would make perfect support vehicles. GWA Cars & Finance top tips for driving in heavy rain

We’ve given you our tips on driving in icy conditions and driving in strong winds before, so in light of the recent spring weather (who knows what will be next!), Gary and I have put together some GWA Cars & Finance tips on driving in heavy rain (other than strap a boat and a couple of oars to the roof, just in case!).

• Check your windscreen wipers. If they look brittle, replace them.
• Slow down. Give yourself more time to decelerate in heavy rain.
• Keep your distance. From other cars and especially lorries and buses.
• Be a disciple. Follow paths through water made by others.
• Deep water danger. The deeper the water is, the less control you’ll have.
• Stop. If it gets too heavy and you don’t feel safe, pull over and wait.

Which big boys have turned up at the compact SUV party?

Based on the recent weather, I should be recommending one of these to drive, but as it is, Gary and I are back on the trail of new compact SUVs. Not any old compact SUVs, but ones from the big boys: Bentley, Lamborghini and Range Rover.
While the GWA Cars & Finance offices are close enough to Chichester Marina that, should the waters really rise, Wattsie and I would be able to hop on board any passing boat, for everybody else, one of these compact SUV should help enormously. And you’d be surviving in style. When Lamborghini unveils a compact SUV, you have to take notice and the Lamborghini Urus certainly makes you do that. Not sure about the name, but I’m going with it.
The Lamborghini Urus wasn’t the only high-end SUV unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show, as Bentley took the covers off its Bentley EXP 9 F luxury SUV concept. This one looks a bit bulkier, so given the trend for compact SUVs, it might be trimmed before it reaches the market. So, what next? A Rolls-Royce compact SUV? I might have to pop over to Goodwood and ask.
If you can’t wait for these models to become available, and they’ll be a while, we have a 2010 BMW X5 xDrive 35d M Sport on the GWA forecourt for £39,995. We also have something that won’t be troubled by floods or gales: a 2010 diesel Nissan Navarra Doublecab Tekna (it probably eats compact SUVs for breakfast).
Last not but not least, if you’ve missed the media frenzy, the Range Rover Evoque Special Edition by Victoria Beckham has been launched. Lots of people have questioned her involvement but I think it’s a shrewd move by the manufacturer given the key market for these cars.
