I was going to write about a recent poll conducted by Which? to find the top ten cars with the lowest running costs. The Renault Clio is on the list and this ties in nicely with the fact that GWA Cars & Finance is offering a very nice deal on a new Clio Hatchback (from £161 per month). However, I’m not.

What happened was the Shanghai Motor Show and two German concept cars that will make their debut at the event later this month. I like the Clio – sporty, great city run around, cheap to run – but I like BMW and Mercedes more: and it is these manufacturers that are unveiling new designs in China.

You come to expect nothing but the best from Mercedes, especially since it changed its motto to the best or nothing, and the Mercedes-Benz Concept A-class goes a long way to reassuring us of the superiority of Teutonic motoring. Despite its size, it has something of the beast about it and looks capable of a fair amount of snarling.

The BMW Concept M5 carries more bite in terms of power and size, but is a little more understated. Nevertheless, it is clearly a member of the predatory M series. The design is familiar, which in this case tells you all you need to know about the fearlessness of this V8-powered car.
