As promised in last week’s award-winning GWA Cars & Finance post, I’ve got a round-up of what the budget did for the motorist. Also, this week, I’ve got the latest on a government proposal that could turn public roads into weekend racetracks.
The drop in fuel duty was the big news for motorists in the budget, but there were plenty of other changes for business car owners, including those to company car benefit-in-kind tax, Approved Mileage Allowance Payments (AMAPs) and vehicle excise duty (VED).
The changes to company car tax are focused on encouraging businesses to make their fleets increasingly green, while AMAPs have been increased, which will no doubt be heartily welcomed by the under-pressure public sector. The freeze in VED for all commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes is also positive, as is the planned introduction of a fair fuel stabiliser, replacing the fuel duty escalator.
Another measure that could bring some relief to the great British motorist is a proposal to allow public roads to be used for motor racing events. The idea is to encourage more amateur motor sport.
I was recently in Lisbon and stumbled upon a stage of the Vodafone Rally de Portugal for which they had converted the roads of Belém into a racetrack. Simple, no fuss, hugely popular – could they do something similar here? Did someone mention red tape, health and safety…?
