The last week has been an interesting one at Ferrari. I found out on Sunday that the weekend marked a historic moment in the history of Ferrari Formula One cars, while a few days earlier the company was forced to recall its new 458 Italia model.
50 years ago this month was the last time a front-engined car would win a Formula One race. The writing had been on the wall for the cars for over a year, but its curtain call was drawn out thanks to obstinate Enzo Ferrari, who was determined that rear-engined cars would never prevail.
He had to relent in the end, but not before his beloved front-engined Dino 246 signed off in dubious style at a virtually rigged 1960 Monza Grand Prix. Three of these cars, the first driven by Phil Hill, led a field devoid of any true competition.
Rubber of a different kind was being burnt by Ferrari in 2010 as it emerged last week that a fault with the adhesive used in the rear wheel arch of the 458 Italia model was causing the cars to catch alight. Chris Evans and Eric Clapton are among the considerably wealthy who’ve received an urgent letter recalling their cars.
