I was at Goodwood Motor Circuit at the weekend for the penultimate Goodwood Breakfast Club meet of the year. A chilly affair this one, with the track straight acting as something of a (cold) wind tunnel, but it was well worth the visit, with lots of great cars on display.
The theme was Deutsch Marques, and as you might expect, there was plenty of what’s great about German motoring on show. A wealth of classic and contemporary Porsches, BMWs, Mercedes and Volkswagens were lined up for us to pore over.
Highlights for me included a classic black gull wing Mercedes with beautiful red leather interior, which I think dated from the 1950s, a slate grey 1961 Porsche 356 B T5 Coupe whose first owner was Frank Wells, son of War of the Worlds author HG, and a bullish silver grey 1980s 3 series BMW, which was the first model to receive the attentions of the team that would launch the performance BMW M range.
Talking of German cars, Porsche’s embracing of hybrid technology that I mentioned in my last blog has begun: the manufacturer has launched its Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid. For all of the eco-friendly fluffiness that some associate with hybrids, this car still looks fearsome: it will do 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds and has a top speed of 150mph. I’d go as far as to ask: is this a new dawn in the era of hybrid cars?
