Now here’s a curious story that has landed on the GWA Cars & Finance news desk: the government is considering raising the speed limit on motorways to 80mph in order to shorten journey times and give our economy a boost.
To someone, somewhere in Whitehall this is presumably a good idea. Well, yes, people may get to work quicker, but I’m not convinced that it would make them earlier – human nature doesn’t work like that. And, if I was playing devil’s advocate here, I could argue that the government was thinking about allowing motorways to become more dangerous, encouraging people to burn fuel quicker and spend more money at petrol stations. Not really the fiscal stimulus we’re after.
So, doesn’t sound too great an idea that, Dave and Nick. Try again. Or, even better, turn it on its head and follow the lead of the Spanish government, which has temporarily reduced the speed limit as a means of encouraging better fuel economy and saving its people money. They’ve also reduced train fares for short and medium-distance journeys.
Talking of good ideas from Spain, we have a special offer on the new Seat Leon1.6TDi Eco Tech S Emocion: it’s available from GWA Cars & Finance from just £219 per month. We’ve also got this 2010 Ford Fiesta 1.4i Titanium available for £12,199. It’s not Iberian, but it’s equally as good around town.
