While everyone else it seemed was wrapped up in the outfits and celebs, I was checking out something else at the royal wedding: the cars. Will and Kate’s appearance in an Aston marked the end of a notable few weeks for British cars.
The Rolls-Royces, the Jaguars and the Bentleys were all on show, but the best of the bunch at the royal wedding was the convertible Aston Martin. It was a 1969 Aston Martin Volante DB6 MKII belonging to Prince Charles. He received it for his 21st birthday and has had it converted to run on E85 bio-ethanol (which doesn’t sound like the best thing to do to a vintage Aston, but anyway, it looked pretty cool).
There were also some rather conspicuous Volkswagen Minibuses on display – I think a fleet of Range Rovers would have been better. We’ve got a lovely one on the GWA Cars & Finance forecourt: a 2007 Range Rover 3.6 TV8 HSE Sport Auto for £34,000.
Not so cool and not entirely British (some production takes place in China) is the brand new MG6, the first new MG to roll off the production line for 16 years. The new car is being positioned to take on the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus.
Another British car maker due to be resurrected with foreign help is Bristol, which has been bought by a Swiss firm. The company are promising a mixture of classic British design and cutting-edge Swiss technology. Talking of European know-how, we have a 2010 Alfa Romeo Mito Lusso 3-door 1.4 Hatchback available for £10,495. Perfect for a right royal getaway!
