Looking out across Birdham from the GWA Cars & Finance offices, it appears the snow has all but completely melted away. This is good. But it’s still pretty icy out there and it seems likely that we haven’t seen the last of the snow. So, here are some winter driving tips from the GWA experts.
- Check your tyres are in good condition, which means at least 3mm of tread for winter driving. Contrary to what some say, reducing tyre pressure doesn’t give you more grip, it just makes you more like Bambi on ice.
- Make sure you have your mobile phone on you and that it’s fully charged. Also, pack a blanket, warm clothes and a small shovel. An old sack is useful too – for putting under the tyres if you get stuck.
- To borrow from the AA – don’t drive off like a tank commander, with a tiny hole cleared into your windscreen. Clear your windscreen, windows and lights.
- Stick to the main roads as much as possible because these should be gritted and, hence, safer to drive on. The Peruvian salt imported by your local council doesn’t tend to reach smaller roads.
- Lastly, an obvious one: drive carefully, which generally means take it easy. Brake gently and increase your stopping distance. Accelerate more slowly as well.
Another way of making winter driving a safer experience is to own a 4×4. You’re not immune to the conditions, but four-wheel drive means more traction and more stability. We have a great offer on this sturdy hulk: a Nissan Navarra 2.5D Aventura Auto. Yours for just £11,950.
Or, how about a Range Rover 3.6 TDV8 HSE Sport Auto for only £34,000? Eats snow and ice for breakfast. Remember, there’s no VAT to pay on either of these previously cherished 4×4s.
