I know being optimistic is not a very British thing to be sometimes, but a Sunday spent reading the papers and catching up with magazines has left me feeling positive about our car industry.
According to one article that I read, van sales in the UK have grown by nearly 130% over the past year, which is incredible given the circumstances. What does this mean for the UK? Well, more people in work I hope, but also, as Martin Love in the Observer points out, an increase in canvas for so-called “sloganeers” – so, more witticisms on dirty vans such as “For sale: sponge and bucket never used”.
I also read that General Motors posted net profits of more than a £1bn for the second quarter of this year, following in the footsteps of BMW and Toyota. These recent profits were more than six times their largest quarterly profit for over six years.
So, as you can tell, I did a lot of reading on Sunday. The reason? Well, partly a great day at Vintage at Goodwood on Saturday. Martha and the Vandellas and the Noisettes were among my highlights, as were an unbelievable Wall of Death and some very nice cars and campers.
The 1980s Audi Quattro parked on the roof of the Warehouse nightclub was a blast from the past, as was the 1962 Jaguar E-type Series 1 in the Bonhams sale. We have our own Audi Quattro for sale (it’s a lot newer!) among other great cars. Check them all out on our new website.
