Decisions. You’re not going to please everyone with them. Just ask Oxfordshire County Council, which is proposing to turn off its speed cameras, or the DVLA, which has just introduced a restyled vehicle registration certificate (the V5C to you and me).
Oxfordshire County Council is planning, reluctantly it seems, to switch off its speed cameras as part of its efforts to accommodate huge spending cuts. It doesn’t receive the revenue from fines (it goes direct to the Treasury apparently) and there are other areas whose priority is higher, such as child and OAP welfare.
Fair enough, but road safety campaigners have reacted with fury, wielding convincing arguments and statistics about the benefits of cameras. I can see both points of view. What’s the solution? Beyond a little mercy from central government, it’s hard to say.
Perhaps they could have saved the millions spent on the relaunching of the V5C. While the restyling has been made to help cut down on motorists being sold vehicles with false documentation, the changes seem relatively minor and expensive. According to the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association, the admin alone will cost over £300 million, which, at a time of massive public sector cuts, appears a little irresponsible.
Talking of motoring safety (to which we contribute) and V5Cs (one of which could be yours), we have some used car specials at the moment, including a 2005 VW Golf 2.0 GT TDi (£8,995) and a 2007 Honda Civic 1.8 EX I-Vtec Auto (£9,450). Both pack a bit of punch but, as always, we recommend you drive responsibly, even in Oxfordshire.
