Now, I’ve always thought that the GWA Cars & Finance blog should be about four-wheeled pursuits, but just this once, I’m going to make an exception. Wattsie has decided to take to two wheels and embark on an epic ride from one end of the country to the other.
Clearly fed up with sharing an office with me and the team, Gary is planning to cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats. He is being joined on Le Tour des Old Farts by his pal Chris and they will be posting regular updates on their progress on the 1,000+ mile journey on their very own blog. I reckon they’ll need plenty of encouragement along the way, so messages on the blog are most welcome.
Gary sets off on 18 June and hopes to reach the finishing line two weeks later, which is a good time by all accounts for us mere amateurs (apparently the record is nine days). So, if you’re around and about the country and see a flash of day-glow Lycra and grey hair, give them a wave.
Personally, I’d prefer to do the distance in the comfort of a car. Either of these two from the GWA forecourt would do nicely: a 2006 BMW Z4 Sport Roadster Convertible (£10,995) and a 2010 BMW X5 xDrive 35d M Sport Auto (£44,995).
Taking of BMW, in a few years I might even be able to do the journey with my feet up (well, nearly). I read at the weekend that the German car company is developing an autopilot system designed to come to the aid of the driver if they are incapacitated. Robot cars can’t be too far away!
