My last post was all about escaping to warmer climes, but I’m bringing us back to earth with a bump this week. Well, hopefully not with a bump – as we’ve been told to expect some proper winter weather, I want to share some GWA tips on driving in the fog.
• Plan ahead – find out how to turn your fog lights on so you’re not left guessing when you need them.
• Low beams – turn on your fog lights and use your low beams. High beams can make visibility worse.
• Slow down – keep an eye on the speedometer; less speed means more time to react.
• Make room – keep your distance from the car in front; increase your normal gap.
• Watch out – use your wipers and defroster to keep the windscreen clear (and don’t use your hands on the inside, use a chamois or cloth).
• No risks – don’t overtake in fog. Be patient and don’t be tempted to risk it in poor visibility.
• Be clear – take care when manoeuvring: signal early and brake gently.
• Park safe – if you have to pull over in the fog, make sure that you’re completely off the road.
Also, properly maintaining your car helps make driving in fog easier. Regularly checking that the lights work is an obvious one and keeping your windows clean also helps to improve visibility. Talking of which, these cars on the GWA Cars & Finance forecourt are spotless and ready to go for the winter – a 2007 Vauxhall Astra Twintop 2.0 Design (£7,495) and a 2007 Mercedes C180K Avantgarde SE Auto Saloon (£8,495).
