Audi has recently launched its A3 Sportback e-tron 1.4 TFSI S tronic. Could this be the car to have in 2015?
Audi already offers a big and broad family of A3s but this e-tron model is something else. Not a pure electric car, as its e-tron name may suggest, but a 1.4-litre plug in hybrid, with no range anxiety to worry about.
The 1.4-litre TFSI petrol engine, matched to a 75 kw electric motor, gives a combined 150 HP via a unique 6-speed S tronic gearbox. A Li-on battery pack lies under the rear floor powering the electric motor.
On pure electric power, the A3 e-tron has a driving range of up to 31 miles, at speeds up to 80 mph. A full recharge of the battery takes between 2 and 4 hours depending on the method. On the move, you have a choice of three hybrid modes or pure EV. The A3 e-tron has pace as well as power Reaching 62 mph in 7.6 seconds. Still, despite all the impressive numbers (including a P11D value of £34,895), is this e-tron the company car A3 to have in 2015?
We think the answer is yes. Being such an eco-friendly car there are many benefits including, zero Road Tax and no London congestion charge to pay, either. The A3 e-tron also qualifies for 100% capital write down allowance for those small businesses that prefer to buy their company cars. The Hybrid engine is very fuel efficient and can reach upto 176 mpg.
There are other benefits for business users as the e-tron sits in a BIK company car tax band of just 5% and with CO2 emissions of only 37 g/km (translating into company car tax of just £29.08 per month for a 20% tax payer), the A3 e-tron is a car of obvious interest to UK business owners.
The e-tron is packed with all your usual Audi technology but you also have the function to connect to the car via your phone. This gives you the ability to view battery status, range and even set the climate control remotely, a very welcome feature during the winter months.
So what is GWA’s verdict? There is no doubt about it, the Audi A3 e-tron is an important car, giving further credibility to the electric/green movement. We know we can rely on Audi’s quality and reliability that we have all become familiar with.
It’s well in sync with the growing industry move into electric cars, but with a plus that there’s no range anxiety to worry about. It’s as well finished, swift, refined and surprisingly normal to drive.
The A3 Sportback shape is very practical on a day to day basis, despite the minor loss of some boot space used up by the battery.
The standard A3 is a very complete product, but this e-tron truly moves the game on in terms of fuel saving and emissions. And while there’s a clear price premium, the ultra-low company car taxes and economy suggests the A3 e-tron could soon take its place as the company car to have in 2015.
