An Action plan has been unveiled to increase the number of car club members in London to a million people by 2025.
The scheme has been dubbed ‘vision for car clubs’ and has been designed in conjunction with Transport For London and London Councils. Residents and businesses across the capital are being encouraged to sign up to schemes as an alternative to direct car ownership.
The Transport For London revealed that 85% of UK car club members are in London, with 27 of the 33 London boroughs having on street parking bays for the clubs.
Ford has launched its own London based car service called GO! Drive. This scheme will also offer one-way journeys with guaranteed parking, congestion charges, insurance and fuel all included in the price. Users can use their smart phone to reserve and access the car.
Half of Ford’s fleet is currently made up of its Electric Focus model. With the average car in London only being used for 4.6 hours per week this scheme appears to be both convenient and an eco-friendly alternative.
Research shows that 80% of Londoners are late for work once or more a month. With the issue removed of having to find a parking space this may be reduced.
Car clubs, car rental and other forms of pay as you go motoring are evolving at a rapid pace, with the view to increase air quality and reduce congestion. With Ford Now on board more electric vehicles will be used in the schemes.
If you are part of a car sharing scheme we would be keen to know your thoughts and experiences.
