Motorists taking their driving test from next year will have to perform “real life tasks”, such as using the horn, windscreen wipers or opening windows.
The “show me, tell me” questions will be changed as of December to include these tasks and are used to test whether students are able to operate these parts of the car without losing control.
The DVLA has already uploaded videos to YouTube as a guide for learner drivers to watch and understand the tasks they will be expected to perform.
Other changes include three-point turns being scrapped in favour of manoeuvres such as reverse bay parking, 20 minutes of independent driving, driving with a sat nav, and parallel parking. It is the biggest overhaul of the practical test in more than 20 years, with students potentially being asked to perform any one of these tasks.
